This year, students can enjoy a full Tet holiday with their families after the first semester exam. In Ho Chi Minh City, for the 2025 Tet holiday schedule, students will have Tet holiday from January 23 to February 2, 2025, lasting 11 days, 2 days more than the original plan (from December 24 to January 5).
Adjusting school schedule to extend Tet holiday
Leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Education Department have proposed a plan for students to return to school 1-2 weeks earlier than the official opening date, in order to create conditions for a longer Tet holiday.
After announcing the adjustment of the holiday schedule from 9 days to 11 days, Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City - shared that schools will be autonomous in building their school year plans. At the same time, he emphasized creating flexible conditions for students who do not reside in the city.
Mr. Minh also noted: “Schools need to ensure sufficient teaching and learning time, testing and assessment according to regulations. At the same time, it is necessary to consider giving students the opportunity to participate in traditional activities such as tomb-sweeping ceremonies with their families during Tet.”
Consensus from teachers and parents
Many parents and teachers, especially those whose hometowns are far away, agree with the extension of the Tet holiday. They see it as a rare opportunity for family reunions. Mr. Le Huu Binh, Principal of Thanh An Primary School (Can Gio District), said that about 30% teachers at the school are from the North and Central regions. Due to the short Tet holiday and high travel costs, many teachers often do not return to their hometowns for Tet but choose to return during the summer vacation.
According to Mr. Binh, if students return to school 1-2 weeks earlier, this time can be used for teaching instead of just getting acquainted with the class or reviewing. This helps students have more time for Tet holiday while still ensuring the curriculum.
The long Tet holiday gives teachers more time.
Although the Tet holiday has been extended to 11 days, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a teacher at a secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City, still cannot return to her hometown in Ha Tinh. She shared that the high price of airfares in the days leading up to Tet makes traveling difficult. She expressed her wish to have more time off so that returning home to visit her family becomes more feasible.

Adjusting the Tet holiday brings joy to students. Besides, it is also a humane solution for teachers and parents living far from home. Thanks to that, families will have more time to spend together.prepare for TetIf you don't know what to prepare, let's find out with Hio!
