Reason

Cartilage is a tough, slippery tissue that allows joints to move with little to no friction. Arthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually wears away. Eventually, if the cartilage is completely worn away, bone rubs against bone.

Osteoarthritis is often called a wear-and-tear disease. But in addition to breaking down cartilage, it affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bones, and deterioration of the connective tissues that hold the joints together, and attach muscles to bones. It also causes inflammation of the lining of the joints.

Risk factors

Factors that may increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis include:

  • Older: The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age.
  • Obesity: Carrying extra body weight contributes to osteoarthritis in several ways.
  • Weight gain: puts extra stress on joints, such as your hips and knees. Additionally, fat tissue produces proteins that can cause harmful inflammation in and around your joints.
  • Joint injuries: injuries that occur during sports or due to accidents increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Even injuries that have healed many years ago still increase the risk of osteoarthritis.
  • Repetitive stress on joints: The job or sport you play puts repetitive stress on your joints, which also increases your risk of inflammation.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that gets worse over time, often resulting in chronic pain. Joint pain and stiffness can become so severe that it makes daily activities difficult.
